Seville’s Aerospace District is born, an EDDEA project for urban growth

Seville City Council has officially announced the creation of an Aerospace Urban District, an initiative based on an original proposal by EDDEA. The project seeks to connect the growth of Andalusia’s aeronautical sector with the city’s urban development, using large tracts of land around San Pablo airport.

A strategic plan for a sustainable city

The future district, covering up to ten million square metres in Sector 5 of Santa Bárbara, will combine residential, productive and commercial uses. It is conceived as a solution for the city’s growth eastwards, an area with great potential for innovation and affordable housing.

José María de Cárdenas, founding partner of EDDEA and author of the plan, highlights the project’s strategic vision: “The proposal grows out of an urban and economic reading of Seville that identifies the eastern axis as the natural space for growth. It is an opportunity to create city, industry and affordable housing from a logic of sustainability and productive specialisation.”

The district’s proximity to San Pablo airport, Airbus and Aerópolis makes it a driving project, comparable to successful European models such as Toulouse and Eindhoven.

Development phases and long-term vision

The first phase of the project will focus on activating more than 800,000 square metres of industrial and logistics land, which will enable the development of Santa Bárbara, Torreblanca Norte and San Nicolás. In the medium term, this ambitious operation envisages up to 24,000 homes and 3.2 million square metres of productive floor space.

The district’s design prioritises connectivity, with an urban structure that integrates the SE-35, the future tram and Metro Line 2, together with green corridors. Backed by major real estate players and the aerospace ecosystem, the project is positioned as an engine of economic growth and territorial cohesion for the Seville metropolitan area.

EDDEA continues to work with public administrations and investors, carrying out complementary studies for the implementation of this ambitious new model of city.
