Mairena del Aljarafe begins the second phase of Parque Central Porzuna, designed by EDDEA

Mairena del Aljarafe Town Council has launched the second phase of the redevelopment of Parque Central Porzuna, an ambitious project designed by EDDEA. This new stage, covering more than 160,000 square metres, carries forward the park whose first phase began in 2009.
The original project, awarded to EDDEA through a competition, sets out to combine the environmental restoration of the Porzuna stream with a system of interconnected “thematic islands”. This approach, developed by the architects José María de Cárdenas and Luis Ybarra, reinvents the idea of the urban park through a specialised distribution of spaces.
A design that evolves over time
The experience gained during the construction of the first phase has allowed EDDEA’s technical team to refine the solutions for this new stage. The revised project incorporates the lessons learnt and adapts to users’ current demands and to the specific conditions of the site.
José María de Cárdenas explains that this second phase will make it possible to “review the project as originally conceived, incorporating new uses requested by residents and new sustainable technologies, while keeping the original philosophy intact”. The design ensures coherence between the two phases, joining the work already completed with the new intervention.
Among the technical improvements in this phase are the integration with the Ronda Urbana Sur ring road and with the flood defence works of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Guadalquivir (Guadalquivir River Basin Authority). LED lighting with remote management will also be installed to optimise energy consumption.
Sustainability and accessibility for the future
The updated project retains the xeriscaping criteria, with native, low-water species and smart irrigation systems. It also strengthens compliance with accessibility regulations by extending tactile paving, adapted rest areas and step-free routes.
This second phase will make Parque Central Porzuna a national benchmark in the design of sustainable public space and a key element in Mairena del Aljarafe’s network of green spaces. “After so many years, seeing this project take shape is enormously satisfying”, says Luis Ybarra. “We are convinced that the Parque Central will transform the way the people of Mairena relate to their town.”
