Revised design approved for the Parque Central in Mairena del Aljarafe, a new green oasis by EDDEA

The revised project for the Parque Central in Mairena del Aljarafe (Seville), a new green lung for the town designed by EDDEA, has been approved by the town council’s Urban Planning Department (Gerencia de Urbanismo). The scheme sets out to restore the area’s environment and make it the focus of local people’s leisure activities.

The new version of the project, which regenerates six marginal hectares of the Aljarafe town, recovers as much as possible of the Porzuna stream, bringing a further 160 metres of its course to the surface so that it adds to the environmental contribution the public park makes to the town as a whole.

Among its distinctive features, the park will have six themed zones, or islands, linked by paths and boardwalks: the memorial square, the children’s island, the fitness island, the nature island, the dog island and the skate island. It will also see the planting of 500 new trees and 700 smaller specimens.

Residents of Los Alcores, Ciudad Almar and Ciudad Expo will also be better connected thanks to a new pedestrian and cycle route included in the project, which will make sustainable mobility easier not only to the Seville Metro terminus but to the whole western part of the town, with safe crossings.

The route, called the Paseo de los Alcores, will run along the eastern side of the park, parallel to Calle Rodrigo de Triana and Calle San José Obrero, and will link Ciudad Expo station directly with Calle San Isidro Labrador.

Once the project is complete, Mairena will have 20 new hectares of green space which, together with the 22 hectares of the Porzuna park to which it will be connected, will form a true green lung not only for the town but for the whole Aljarafe district.

“A key project”

The mayor, Antonio Conde, stressed the need “to create a park that is key to the town’s project and to the lives of Mairena’s future generations, always respecting control of public finances and being sustainable both environmentally and financially”.

According to the mayor, “the completion of the park is guaranteed because the council already has the money to carry out the works in full, since the investment in the park will be financed with so-called general systems funds, which do not come from the council’s coffers but directly from property developers and from the obligations attached to the land they are developing”.
