This project for 2,700 homes in Nairobi, Kenya, sets out to rethink the design and development stages of urban extensions for low-density, rapid-build affordable housing, within the complex context of the growth of East Africa's emerging cities.

Tatu Waters is woven into its surroundings. The urban environment within the community is tied to the natural features of the Kenyan landscape. A dense network of public spaces connects the existing green areas to the north and south of the site, making it walkable and providing every kind of facility to meet residents' daily needs without leaving the security perimeter.

Extending an emerging city

The project takes on the challenge of designing and building the extension of an emerging city through multi-scale and standardisation strategies. It also takes account of local constraints and existing assets (green spaces, lakes and streams, transport networks, social characteristics and so on).

Design through indicators

We work with a new, integrated approach to urban and architectural design, based on sustainability indicators that shape the masterplan and certify its quality in terms of efficiency, energy use, social cohesion, quality of life and urban complexity, while also preserving the local natural, social and heritage values of the setting.
