The community of Odintsovo needed a plan to densify the centre of its district and create a new urban landscape that would resolve the problems shared by the 1950s, 60s and 70s developments on the outskirts of Russian cities: disconnected services, a lack of centrality, outdated mobility and, above all, repetitive public spaces that more often than not lack character and scale.

Our masterplan

The masterplan intensifies the core of one of the locations with the greatest potential in the thriving Moscow metropolitan region, setting new quality standards for the post-socialist city.

It organises new residential, public and administrative uses and a technology park to build bridges between citizens and public space, creating points of access and active streets that stimulate urban life.

Red and Green: updating the landscape for citizens

The district is organised into two bands, the Red-grid and the Green-grid, in response to the site’s dual condition as an urban magnet and a natural magnet. The grid is a key instrument for reconciling existing and proposed structures: a flexible tool that adapts to the existing context.

The presentation

Part of the EDDEA team’s effort on this project went into finding a format, a medium capable of helping us convey both the complexity of the problem we faced and the simplicity of the solution. A printed newspaper—one of the paradoxes of the digital age—was in the end the narrative framework we chose.
