EDDEA to draw up the masterplan for Shumanay district, Karakalpakstan, for UNDP

EDDEA has officially begun the Masterplan for Shumanay district, in the Republic of Karakalpakstan (Uzbekistan), commissioned by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Following the Kaohsiung Pop Music Centre in Taiwan, the project opens a new chapter for the studio in Asia.

First field mission

During the initial mission, the team worked alongside UNDP, Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Shumanay district administration (Hokimiyat) and local partner Optimal Architect Group. Consultations with local stakeholders and technical visits were carried out to analyse the district’s urban, social, economic and environmental context.

The outcome of this first fieldwork is the definition of a target area of up to 100 hectares with high potential for urban regeneration.

Next steps

Under the direction of Anja Ehrenfried, the team is now undertaking an in-depth territorial analysis, building a strategic vision shared with the local authorities and drafting the Concept Masterplan that will guide Shumanay’s sustainable growth.
