EDDEA wins the A101 Block City international competition in Moscow ahead of MVRDV and KCAP

The team formed by EDDEA and Citythinking has won the A101 Block City international competition, organised by the developer Masshtab to plan a 200-hectare site beside the A101 motorway, south-west of Moscow. The magazine paisea reported the result in December 2010.
In the final stage, the studio’s proposal prevailed over those of MVRDV, KCAP / Next Architects and Hemmler Sattler + Albrecht, three of the leading teams in European urbanism at the time.
The “Fractal Block Project”
The winning proposal, named Fractal Block Project, builds the city from the block as the unit of growth, in a logic of repetition and variation that allows the development to scale up without losing its urban identity. The project was exhibited at the Shchusev State Museum of Architecture in Moscow until January 2011.
A101 Block City marked the start of a period of sustained work by EDDEA in Russia, which would continue over the following decade with commissions in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Vladivostok.
