Moscow’s Spanish Quarter, designed by EDDEA and Atlántica, is now taking shape

Almost three years ago we completed the largest project we had ever undertaken: the design of almost 5,200 homes of between 30 and 120 m², with all the services they need (streets, parks, nurseries, schools, shops and clinics). It is the “Spanish Quarter”, as they call it in Moscow: a commission from our partners at Atlántica for an extension of almost 45 hectares to the south-west of the capital, where homes for the new middle class will go up in record time.
In contrast to the usual blocks on the city’s outskirts, 20 or even 30 storeys high, separated by large open spaces and with few facilities, our proposal, developed with Atlántica and with Salvador Rueda of the Urban Ecology Agency of Barcelona, put forward something entirely new in Russia: almost 20 semi-open urban blocks of between 5 and 16 storeys, arranged on a regular urban grid of between 100 and 125 metres.
The project has its origins in the A101 proposal, winner of the 2010 Block City international competition. Today the works on the first phase of the new district can already be seen.
